Norilsk Nickel estimates damage from fuel spillout at 21 bln rbl

MOSCOW, Oct 5 (PRIME) -- Russian metals producer Norilsk Nickel estimates damage from a May fuel spill in Norilsk at 21.4 billion rubles, the company said in a statement on Monday.

Norilsk Nickel notified that Taimyr Energy Company that owns the TETs-3 power plant had presented a response to a claim by the Federal Service for Natural Resources Oversight, in which it demands environment damage compensation of 147.8 billion rubles, to the Krasnoyarsk Region Court, the company said.

"Under an estimate by Taimyr Energy Company, taking into account the calculations of environmental damage and taking into account the circumstances of the incident, the total environmental damage stands at 21.4 billion rubles," the company said.

A fuel tank on the premises of Norilsk Nickel’s unit Taimyr Energy Company lost pressure on May 29 and leaked out 21,000 tonnes of fuel and lubricants into the river Ambarnaya, causing fire and a spillout of fuel.
